I can’t remember just how long back or how it was that I first came across Bahamas. But I know I was instantly obsessed. I recall listening to Pink Strat while in hospital visiting my sister after her boy was born so that must be around 2009, looks like around it’s release. All his following work has been equally as great.
Afie’s musicianship and the way he plays with melodies and lyrics is mesmerising. I read that he likes to follow in Willie Nelson’s footsteps by putting sad lyrics to happy melodies and vice versa.
His style is unique, strong in harmonies, stories, catchy pop like melodies, but happy, strange, easy to listen to, and melancholic all at once!
Lost In The Light is my (hopefully distant!) funeral song.
I believe he made a name for himself as a session guitarist (I feel I heard he played for Feist) then push onwards on his own.
I saw that, for some reason, he was playing at the Brunell Club in Leeds years back, in the smaller room and I got me and Jo tickets. I was blown away by the talent of the band, the cheekiness and confidence - amazed at how many people had also heard of him! Live he has a drive that can’t be experienced in a recording so if you ever get chance, go see him!
He’s a cheeky boy with a good sense of humour via social media if you want to search him out!
I love the feel of effortless, laid back feel in his music, giving a deceiving ease to his genius!
