I was pretty late to discover Greg Brown, only finding him a couple of years back after seeing a bunch of my favourite artists love him and often support him when they cross paths in towns across the US.
I was playing at the Wunderbar in Lyttelton and describing his work to other fellow musicians and they were all ‘yeah! I love Greg!’
He seems to be very much a musicians musician. Not over technical, but a great story teller, has an immensely deep and rich voice that is hugely expressive of the emotions of every word he sings.
Spring Wind and Worrisome Years are two of my favourite songs.
Dream Cafe is the first album I heard of his and every track I could listen to over and over again!
If you’ve not heard him before, please do look him up and discover a world of music that is hiding away and yet deeply established and adored by many! I always love hearing Dean Hetherington - our friend and West Coast legend - cover his songs at open mic nights.
