The first song I heard by Matt Corby was "Brother" off his 2011, Into The Flame EP. It was an absolutely gorgeous angry song with so much feeling that it instantly grabbed my attention.
5 years later in 2016, when we moved out to NZ, this album came along. It became the soundtrack for our travels.
The album takes you into an atmospheric beautiful world with the most ethereal vocals you'll ever hear from an Australian fella.
I think "Monday" is my favourite song from the album. The melody and lyrics steal the show as it's accompanied by minimal musical backing, just clicks and oooh! The line "Oh I was never lost, I only chose to never go home" struck a chord as we were in the process of moving across the world and all the complex emotions that come with that.
We've had the privilege of seeing Matt twice. Once at the Isaac Theatre and once at Electric Avenue festival, both in Christchurch. The show at the theatre could well be one of the favourites I've ever seen. The intimacy, brilliant backing band and Matt's vocal's were an epic recipe.
There's more albums, EP's and singles for anyone who wants to take a deep dive into his work. You won't regret it!
