#7 - Top 20 Influential Albums

This was a though one! I adore all the work that the IDLES have put out into the world but I had to pick this particular album as it's the first I heard from them.

I somehow stumbled on a clip of them playing Glastonbury in 2019 and have since had a small obsession. I loved the tongue in cheek lyrics and the accent that reminds me of home.

This album takes you on an epic post-punk, hardcore, unrefined journey of emotions as it deals with loss, addiction, sobriety, Brexit, anger, racism and love. It is completely daft in spots, with songs like "Never Fight a Man with a Perm" and full of love and respect in other songs like "Danny Nedelko".

When we saw they were coming to Christchurch in 2022, there was no two ways about it, we HAD to get tickets. The day arrived and we headed into town early. IDLES fans were easily identified by their band t-shirts and welcoming attitude. We somehow ended up having a pre show drink with a group who also turned out to be fellow musicians. The show was everything you'd expect it to be, loud, heartfelt and so so much fun.

IDLES inspired me to not be quite so coy with songwriting, and that if I have something worth writing a song about, say it and mean it with all your heart.

As Idles continue to put out more new works, you can clearly see their personal development. The new album is all centred around love. It's so nice to hear some more melodic melodies from lead singer, Joe Talbot.
